AI

Artificial intelligence is more a part of our lives than ever before. While some might call it hype and compare it to NFTs or 3D TVs, generative AI is causing a sea change in nearly every part of the technology industry. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is still the best-known AI chatbot around, but with Google pushing Gemini, Microsoft building Copilot, and Apple adding its Intelligence to Siri, AI is probably going to be in the spotlight for a very long time. At The Verge, we’re exploring what might be possible with AI — and a lot of the bad stuff AI does, too.

OpenAI buys into personal investing.

OpenAI has acquired Roi, a personal investing startup backed by Kevin Durant that promised AI-driven “insights, education, and guidance.”

Roi will shut down its service, which offered traditional investment options alongside crypto and NFTs, on October 15th and says it’s deleting all user data.

It’s even easier for Google’s AI agent to code for you.

Previously, Google’s AI coding agent Jules was accessible on GitHub or its website. Now, developers can access it directly in their terminal using a new command line interface or in tools like Slack using the newly available Jules API. Support for Google Workspace users is coming later this month, the company says.

Grok is looking for a human “tutor” on how to make video games.

xAI is recruiting humans to train its AI system Grok to “excel” at making video games, according to the company’s job posting for a “video games tutor.”

Elon Musk has discussed this before, saying he wants to “make games great again!

You will use proprietary software to provide labels, annotations, and inputs on projects involving game mechanics, narratives, and design elements. You must support the delivery of high-quality curated data that enhances AI’s understanding of gaming principles and outputs.”

Sora 2 users are having fun with Sam Altman’s face.

People are unsurprisingly teasing the OpenAI CEO after he allowed anyone to use his likeness via the AI video generator’s “cameo” feature. Some of the Sora 2 clips shared by PetaPixel show Altman stealing Studio Ghibli art and GPUs and, uh, roleplaying a low-effort cat fursona.

It’s curtains for AI Elsa, Spider-Man, and Darth Vader.

Disney’s notorious legal team complained Character.AI was damaging its brand and exploiting its intellectual property by allowing unauthorized chatbots of its characters.

Don’t worry, there’s still an abundance of bots pretending to be characters owned by other companies if that’s what you’re after, including hordes of Shreks and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Raking it in but burning billions.

OpenAI pulled in $4.3 billion in sales in the first half of 2025, The Information reports. That’s up 16 percent from the same time last year — but high running costs mean it burnt through $2.5 billion. Big bills loom, too, with the company expecting to burn $115 billion by 2030.

Running out of yes men.

The Financial Times has a good rundown of the extensive executive churn across Elon Musk’s companies in recent months, from Tesla’s robotics team to xAI’s CFO. Musk’s “24/7 campaign-style work ethos” is apparently a little difficult to keep up with.

ChatGPT’s built-in Buy Now button has arrived.

Users of OpenAI’s chatbot can now buy that last-minute birthday gift for a friend via Etsy without leaving ChatGPT. Instant Checkouts powered by OpenAI’s new “Agentic commerce protocol” are free for users, but merchants need to pay a fee (of unspecified amount, per the WSJ) to complete the order.

Build your next innovation at AI Lofts

Generative AI is already reshaping every industry, but developers and startups can often face barriers to accessing the enterprise-grade AI infrastructure necessary to scale their ideas. Amazon Web Services (AWS) Gen AI Lofts are built to fill this gap, creating pop-up spaces where local AI communities can learn, connect, and build. This fall, AWS Lofts are coming to five tech hubs around the world, giving participants the opportunity to get hands-on with AWS’ advanced AI tools (like Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q) and work alongside AWS experts to develop and scale production-ready AI applications. AWS Lofts are designed to be more than just a temporary space — it’s a place to join the growing AI community in your city and network with industry leaders. Who knows, you could even meet your next investor or co-founder. Find a location near you, view upcoming sessions, and request to attend by exploring the pages below.
